VISITING GRAND LODGE
DELEGATIONS
All Brethren except the
Deputy Grand Master's procession being previously seated, the Deputy Grand
Master's procession entered Grand Lodge and subsequently visiting delegations
from the Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany, the Grand Lodge of
Spain, the Regular Grand Lodge of Belgium, the Grand Lodge of Finland, the
National Grand Lodge of France, Grand Lodge Alpina of Switzerland, the Grand
Lodge of Virginia, the Grand Lodge of Sweden, the Grand East of the
Netherlands, the Grand Lodge of Scotland and the United Grand Lodge of
England, were received individually.
Following the opening of
Grand Lodge, the Deputy Grand Master welcomed the visiting delegations in
reverse order of seniority and each delegation was saluted. The
Representatives of visiting Sister Grand Lodges were as follows:- the Grand

The Pro Grand Master of the
United Grand Lodge of England, M.W. Brother Lord Northampton and the Grand
Master of the Grand Lodge of Spain, M.W. Brother Thomas Sarobe, thanked the
Deputy Grand Master and Brethren for their welcome and conveyed greetings on
behalf of the delegations present.
NOTICE CONVENING ESPECIAL
COMMUNICATION
The Grand Secretary read the
Convening Notice, announcing that an Especial Communication of the Grand Lodge
would be held at Freemasons' Hall, Dublin on Thursday the 22nd day of
November, 2001, at the hour of three thirty o'clock p.m. precisely, to install
R.W. Brother Eric N. Waller as M.W. Grand Master; and announced that R.W.
Brother Waller was without Grand Lodge, awaiting the Deputy Grand Master's
pleasure. The Deputy Grand Master directed the Grand Director of Ceremonies to
form a procession and retire in order to introduce the Grand Master Elect. The
procession consisted of the Grand Director of Ceremonies, the Grand Deacons,
the Grand Master's Standard Bearer, the Senior Grand Chaplain bearing the
Volume of the Sacred Law, the Grand Secretary bearing the Laws &
Constitutions of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, the Grand Sword Bearer, the Grand
Master's sponsors, R.W. Brother J. Kenneth Dunne, Provincial Grand Master of
the Midland Counties and R.W. Brother Dennis Millen, Provincial Assistant
Grand Master of Antrim, and the Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies.
Brother Peter Waller, son of the Grand Master Elect, acted as Regalia Bearer.
On the re‑entry of the procession, the Grand Master Elect was
perambulated three times before being obligated, invested, installed,
proclaimed and saluted as M.W. Grand Master.
ADDRESS BY GRAND MASTER
The Grand Master then
addressed Grand Lodge.
INSTALLATION OF DEPUTY GRAND
MASTER
The Grand Master called on
the Grand Director of Ceremonies to form a procession and present the Deputy
Grand Master Designate for Installation. The procession consisted of the
Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies, the Grand Deacons, the Deputy Grand
Master's sponsors, R.W. Brothers Robert G. Quigley, Provincial Deputy Grand
Master of Londonderry & Donegal and Winston C. Patterson, Provincial
Assistant Grand Master of Londonderry & Donegal, and W. Brother Kevin
Doherty, Chain Bearer. The Deputy Grand Master Designate, R.W. Brother George
Dunlop, was conducted to the foot of the throne for presentation and was
thereafter obligated, invested, installed, proclaimed and saluted.
PRESENTATION OF COLLAR JEWEL
FOR THE PAST DEPUTY GRAND MASTER
The Grand Director of
Ceremonies then presented Brethren from Glittering Star Lodge No. 322, in the
Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment to present a jewel to the Grand
Master to be worn by the Immediate Past Deputy Grand Master. The Grand Master
received the presentation jewel and thanked the Representatives of Glittering
Star Lodge No. 322, for their generous gift. He then attached the jewel to the
Past Deputy Grand Master's Chain of Office, which was greeted with applause.
INSTALLATION OF ASSISTANT
GRAND MASTER
The Grand Master then called
on the Grand Director of Ceremonies to form a procession and present the
Assistant Grand Master Designate whose procession was the same as for the
Deputy Grand Master except for his sponsors who were R.W. Brothers Robert
Campbell and James Kirk, Past Provincial Grand Masters of Down. Brother
Michael Mawhinney, son of R.W.Brother William Mawhinney, acted as Chain
Bearer. The Assistant Grand Master was obligated, invested, installed,
proclaimed and saluted.
MESSAGES OF CONGRATULATION
The Grand Secretary reported
on receipt of congratulations and expressions of loyalty from those Provinces
whose Provincial Grand Masters were unable to attend and from Irish Freemasons
Overseas and other Sister Grand Lodges.
R.W. Brother Daniel B.
Fincher, Past Senior Grand Warden, and Representative of the Regular Grand
Lodge of Belgium, as Doyen of the Corps of Grand Representatives, conveyed
congratulations to the Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master and Assistant Grand
Master from all Grand Lodges in amity with the Grand Lodge of Ireland other
than those personally represented at this Installation Ceremony.
PATENT OF APPOINTMENT FOR
M.W. BRO. LORD NORTHAMPTON
The Grand Director of
Ceremonies and the Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies then presented M.W.
Brother Lord Northampton, Pro Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of
England, to the Grand Master to receive his Patent of Appointment as
Representative of the Grand Lodge of Ireland at the United Grand Lodge of
England. M.W. Brother Lord Northampton pointed out that one of his duties was
to nominate Brethren to act as Representatives of Sister Grand Lodges and
admitted that he had, in fact, retained this Representation for himself. The
Grand Master presented him with his Patent of Appointment, amidst applause,
and wished him a long and enjoyable tenure of Office as our Grand
Representative. M.W. Brother Lord Northampton was conducted to his seat and
was saluted.
REPLICA BALL'S BRIDGE SQUARE
PRESENTED TO THE GRAND MASTER
A delegation from the
Province of North Munster led by the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Brother
Geoffrey G. Ashton, was presented to the Grand Master to present him with the
first of a limited edition, in hall‑marked silver, of the Ball's Bridge
Square, which was being struck to commemorate and raise funds for the erection
of the new Masonic Centre in Limerick, close to the place where, in 1830, the
original Ball's Bridge Square was found in the foundations of the Bridge when
undergoing repairs.
APPOINTMENT OF NEW
PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTERS
The Grand Master announced
that he was appointing new Provincial Grand Masters for the Provinces of
Londonderry & Donegal and Down. As Provincial Grand Master Designate of
Londonderry & Donegal he was appointing R.W. Brother Robert G. Quigley,
Provincial Deputy Grand Master; and for the Province of Down he was appointing
R.W. Brother John F. Kerr, Provincial Deputy Grand Master. He announced that
he would instal the Provincial Grand Master Designate of Down on Saturday
December 15`h; and that he would instal the Provincial Grand Master Designate
of Londonderry & Donegal early in the New Year. The Grand Master's
announcements were greeted with acclamation.
GRAND LODGE CLOSED
There being no further
business, Grand Lodge closed and the Grand Master, accompanied by M.W. Brother
Lord Donegall, Past Grand Master, R.W. Brother R. Eric Fenelon, Past Deputy
Grand Master, the Officers of Grand Lodge, the Provincial Grand Masters and
Visiting Delegations from Sister Grand Lodges, retired in procession.
Later that evening some 380
Brethren, their ladies and friends, attended a Celebratory Banquet in Jurys
Hotel, Ballsbridge.
